Volunteer tutors at Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre support adult learners with their literacy development by:

  • Assisting classroom teachers during our daytime English as an Additional Language Classes.
  • Working one on one with an adult literacy learner for an hour or more a week at CNLC, the local library or other community venues.

To Be a Volunteer Literacy Tutor You Need 

Passion & enthusiasm for learning & teaching

Understanding & respect for learners from diverse backgrounds

Capacity to develop a learning program based on adult learner’s needs and level of skill

Willingness to commit an hour a week for a minimum of 10 weeks

Your learner’s activities and needs may include:

  • Writing emails and text messages
  • Paying bills
  • Form filling such as Centrelink
  • Support in understanding the Australian way of life
  • Finding and reading community information
  • Understanding Medicine labels
  • Learning to read stories to preschool children
  • Getting a Learner’s permit
  • Learning English using computers
  • Helping to understand course material for a TAFE course

Each session you run will also include exercises and activities to develop spelling, reading and writing strategies and have a routine structure.


A Volunteer Tutor Training Course of 3 X 2hr sessions is run each semester for new tutors. On completion of the course you will be matched with an adult literacy learner.
